Hardscaping in New Jersey: Patios, Walkways & Outdoor Living

Hardscaping is everything in your landscape that isn't a plant — patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and pool surrounds. Done well, it adds usable square footage, dramatically increases curb appeal, and returns 60–80% of its cost at resale in New Jersey markets. Done poorly, it heaves, cracks, and pools water against the foundation within two winters.

The hardscape elements we install most in NJ

New Jersey homeowners gravitate toward a consistent set of outdoor upgrades — usually phased over several seasons.

  • Paver and stone patios (Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Cambridge)
  • Walkways, driveways, and aprons
  • Segmental retaining walls and seat walls
  • Outdoor kitchens, grill surrounds, and pizza ovens
  • Fire pits, fire tables, and gas fire features
  • Pool decks, copings, and pool surrounds

Why base prep is everything

A paver patio is only as good as what's underneath it. NJ frost heave will destroy any hardscape installed on insufficient base. We excavate 8–12 inches, install woven geotextile fabric, compact 6–10 inches of dense-grade aggregate in 2-inch lifts, and screed a 1-inch bedding layer of concrete sand. Then — and only then — pavers go down.

Drainage — the difference between 5 years and 50

Every patio should pitch 1/4 inch per foot away from the house. Retaining walls need engineered drainage stone, drainage pipe, and proper outlet. Driveways need to shed water without channeling it into the garage. We design drainage into every project from day one — not as an afterthought.

Polymeric sand and long-term joint stability

After pavers are laid, we sweep polymeric sand into the joints, compact, and activate with water. The sand locks into a flexible-but-bonded matrix that prevents weed growth, ant tunnels, and joint washout for 10+ years. Cheaper jobs skip this step or use standard mason sand — and the patio looks rough within two seasons.

What it costs in NJ

Paver patios in New Jersey typically run $25–$45 per square foot installed, walkways $20–$40, segmental retaining walls $40–$70 per face foot, and full outdoor kitchens $15,000–$60,000+ depending on appliances. Stamped or decorative concrete sits 20–40% below paver pricing but has a shorter aesthetic lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a paver patio last in NJ?

A properly base-prepped paver patio lasts 30–50+ years. The pavers themselves are nearly indestructible — failures almost always trace back to inadequate base or poor drainage.

Do I need a permit for hardscaping?

Most NJ municipalities require permits for retaining walls over 4 ft, driveway aprons, and any work in the right-of-way. Patios usually don't require permits but always check your local zoning.

Can you tie new hardscape into existing landscaping?

Yes — we coordinate with your landscaper or in-house design team to integrate new patios and walls with existing planting beds, irrigation, and lighting.
